Postdoctoral Seed Grant

Purpose: The goal of this initiative is to provide Iowa State University Postdoctoral researchers a valuable opportunity to apply for research funding in the role of Principal Investigator (PI). Postdoctoral researchers, or Postdocs, are expected to develop independent research; this opportunity provides the funds necessary to gain such experience. The proposed seed grants will be competitively awarded.

Eligibility: Postdocs with established salary support for the duration of the proposed project.

Funded Proposals

  • Project duration: 12 months
  • Maximum budget for research proposals: $2,400
  • Seed grant money is intended to support research efforts and may include any supplies, materials, etc. that are needed to complete the research excluding permanent equipment
  • Seed grant money cannot be used for Postdoc salary or research assistant support
  • Seed grant money cannot be used for professional conferences
     

The Postdoctoral Association would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to the Graduate College for funding 3 of the 6 Postdoctoral Seed Grants and for lobbying the other colleges to match the funding amount to increase the seed grants from $1,200 to $2,400.  The university support for postdoctoral scholars is felt amongst the group.

Postdoctoral Scholar Research Excellence Award

Purpose / Description: This award honors postdoctoral scholars who have made innovative and significant research contributions to their field of study.

Number of awards: Four awards

Award: Certificate and $100

Eligibility: Current postdoctoral scholars who have spent a minimum of 6 months at ISU. Research must have been conducted during postdoctoral appointment. The postdoctoral scholar’s appointment must be through the nomination deadline.

Postdoctoral Scholar Excellence Award for Teaching and Mentoring Students

Purpose / Description: This award honors postdoctoral scholars who have made innovative and significant contributions to training future scientists and who exemplify excellence in the teaching/learning mission of ISU. This award may reflect excellence in either classroom teaching or in supervision of undergraduate or graduate students in research.

Number of awards: Two awards

Award: Certificate and $100

Eligibility: Current postdoctoral scholars who have spent a minimum of 6 months at ISU. The postdoctoral scholar’s appointment must continue through the nomination deadline.

Postdoctoral Mentoring Award

Purpose / Description: Each year two principal investigators at Iowa State University are awarded for their excellence in mentorship of postdoctoral fellows. The purpose of this award is to promote a collaborative research environment for the postdoctoral fellows at Iowa State University, eventually leading to the successful transition of the fellows to the next stage in their career.

Number of awards: Two awards

Nomination process: Only the PI’s current postdoctoral scholar or a former postdoctoral scholar who has completed the postdoctoral training within two years can nominate their mentor at Iowa State University. The following documents should be submitted:

  1. Nomination letter (from a current or former postdoctoral scholar)
  2. Curriculum vitae of the PI being nominated
  3. List of current postdoctoral scholars supervised
  4. List of previous postdoctoral scholars, and their current employment situation
  5. Statement of support (one page) from another current or former postdoctoral scholar
  6. Complete nomination form found on the second page in the detailed description file (Postdoctoral Mentoring Award Form at Iowa State University)
